What's a Corn Palace?

Right here folks, the Worlds only Corn Palace right here in Mitchell South Dakota. We couldn't pass up the opportunity to view this amazing work of art. The history and the themed  Iconic Folk Art constructed on the exterior  has been on display since 1892. Each year the theme changes and the wall are stripped of the old murals and redecorated with new corn and grains.

Once inside-----
Cookies and cream pop corn , peanut butter popcorn, chocolate popcorn, caramel popcorn, popcorn balls, and corn dog to name just a few. Of course you can get the T-shirt and the "been-there-done-that" hat.  Watch the video on the history of the Corn Palace and purchase corn salt and pepper  shakers, corn coffee cups and popcorn on the cob to pop in your microwave. Can't wait to see how that works?

If you look closely you can see each individual cob of corn. For more information click above on the words "Corn Palace". It will take you to their web site for more information.

This is one entire side of the exterior of the building. They are just beginning the new theme for the year. Bushels of rye, oat heads and sour dock are tied in bundles and attached as you can see just below the mural.. Then when the corn crop is ready, the ears are sawed in half lengthwise and nailed to the murals  following patterns created by local artists. The colors change from year to year, depending on the abundance of their corn crops. Every year since 1892. Pretty impressive.
