Medalta Stoneware Museum in Medicine Hat (Gas City). Apparently Bobs first visit in his 64 years |
Medalta Potteries opened in 1912 and was the main producer of 75% of the countries stone ware.
The beehive kiln's were built in 1918 and operated continuously, fueled by Natural Gas until the plant closed in 1954.
These kilns used to bake the stoneware.
Bob and Norm inside a non-working kiln. Just an example of the pottery produced through out the era.
Murels of the working plant in the early 1900's.
Pottery going into the kiln
Mural depicting finishing touches to the pre-fired pottery on a turning wheel.
The Medalta factory clay production rooms as they existed when closed in 1954. Virtually untouched since closure.
Very interesting to see see the working conditions in that era.
Bob and Norm and what appears to be a water pipe joint created by Medalta pottery.
The Medalta pottery museum continues to produce pottery on a small scale that replicates the early Medalta ware.
We were lucky enough to watch some of this pottery being made in a separate facility.
It takes weeks to complete one item.
