El Coyote Beach Brown Pelican

This is a photo of the Brown Pelican preening themselves just outside of Janell and Gary's tent. They are just beginning to change to their colorful breeding plumage. The Brown Pelican have a unique feeding strategy. They are the only pelican species to dive from the air into the water to catch its pray with its specialized beak pouch. It is very entertaining for us to watch its sometimes graceful, sometimes ungainly dives while attempting to catch a meal.
