4-Wheel Adventure Around the East Cape

Car Camping/4-wheel trip down the East Cape of Baja.
We boarded the Jeep  in La Paz.
Drove to Los Planes and over to  Bahia de la Ventana.
We started our 4-wheel adventure on the top right side of the map in Bahia de la Ventana (not shown) which is located north of  Los Barriles. Note the lightly colored 4-wheel road around the parameter of the right
side of the map. This is our route.
Down to Cabo San Lucas, up to Todos Santos and back to La Paz.

Bahia de la Ventana(Bay Window) pictured right.
Home of the world famous kite boarding Exposition.

The location of the Isla Cerralvo along with the mountains creates a unique venturi that has made Bahia de La Ventana one of the most popular places to kiteboard and windsurf.
Thermal winds are generated from mid October though the end of March.  People come from all over the world to kite board and wind surf this bay.

Heading south, just outside Los Planes is the 4-wheel road that parallels the Sea of Cortez heading south. You can see the road just above the jeep in the picture to the left. It is an amazing drive. Our next stop is Los Barriles for shrimp tacos.

Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park. South of Los Barriles.
This shallow bay cradles one of the 3 living reefs (the only hard coral reef) in North America.

Norm is stretching his legs after a day of 4-wheeling.

Cabo Pulmo is a breathtaking bay. Snorkeling is permitted, but no walking on the living coral.

We ended our day in Los Fralies. New tent, new air mattress and our back packing stove for morning coffee. Oh,  cookies and fruit for breakfast.

Morning Coffee and wide open space at Los Frailes.

A hard day of 4-wheeling has it's rewards.
Just testing the new air mattress.

Water available in Los Frailes.
Only one problem---you can't drink it.

The only sign on the well is the name and location of the nearest doctor.
Just in case you didn't get the information about the water being unsafe to drink.

There is sometimes a question of whether the land you are buying is actually owned by the seller????

We often hear interesting stories about land purchases on the Baja.

  1. Heidi Young and I drove our Lazy Dazes to Cabo Pulmo -- one of Baja's secret sweet spots -- but couldn't take them any further. Please let us know if there is any resort construction or road building being done between Cabo Pulmo and San Jose del Cabo. We heard rumors, but Oh please say it isn't so!! Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy you lucky people!

    1. Lorna, it is not so. Still a very bumpy and dusty road. No resort/no homes. Fortunately. Apparently the concerns about damage to the Reef was taken seriously. So the project was scrapped.
